Any discussion of self-improvement is never complete without some mention about goal setting. If you listen to any of the popular self-improvement and motivational gurus, they will inevitably bring up the importance of setting goals. Unfortunately, people put more thought into planning a vacation than planning their lives. By the time retirement comes around, many regret never having gone through some kind of goal setting exercise.

To make it easier to set goals, you can follow a set of goal setting tips. Taking a few minutes out of your day can make a huge difference in the rest of your life.

First, prioritize what is important to you and make a list. How important is your family? How important is your faith? How important are your hobbies? Goal setting tips evaluating your priorities and values will help shape how you conduct your day-to-day living.

Next on the list of goal setting tips is to think about how you want the end to look like. That is, when you've achieved all of your goals, visualize where you'll be, who you're with, and what you'll be doing.

Looking more short-term, make a list of things you want to achieve this year. Focusing on your list will help you to filter out the "noise" that seem to clutter our lives every day. Instead of engaging in time-wasting activities, you can direct your energy in a more productive way with your list of potential achievements.

One of the most important goal setting tips you will learn is to use visualization. Your mind thinks in pictures, not words, and when it can visualize something, it can work more efficiently to achieve that end. A powerful exercise you can perform to help your visualization is to map out your goals. Using the skills learned from grade-school art class, get a bunch of magazines, brochures, and other pictures together. Cut out the images that represent goals that you want to achieve. If you want a certain car, get a picture of it and cut it out. If you want financial freedom, cut out a picture of what you visualize to represent financial freedom. Once you have all of your cut-outs, paste them onto a poster board. Hang it somewhere where you can look at it every day.
